History of Nepal

The history of Nepal is interesting. ‘Nepal’ wasn’t a single country before King Prithvi Narayan Shah of Gorkha unified the country in 1786. Nepal was never colonized by any country in history. The meaning of NEPAL is:

N: NEVER

E: ENDING

P: PEACE

A: AND

L: LOVE

Well, before the unification, the Kirats, Lichchavis, Thakuris, and Mallas ruled different parts of the countries. Nepal, in the 7th century BC was under the rule of Kirats. After Kirats, the Lichchavi dynasty ruled from the 2nd to 9th century AD.

After the Lichchavi kings, the Mallas ruled over Nepal for two centuries. The Ranas divided Nepal into many small kingdoms and principalities. In 1844, Jang Bahadur Rana was the Prime Minister of Nepal. He revolted against the autocratic rules of the Ranas. It was during his time when the famous Kot Massacre occurred.

The 104 years long Rana regime ended as the Shah family took their place in the palace. During the Shah Regime, Nepal got unified by the famous King Prithvi Narayan Shah. The Shah Dynasty came to an end in 2006 during the reign of King Gyanendra.
